2007 WRAP UP – 2008 OUTLOOK

Another season is over, seems like they are going faster every year. A great summer weather-wise this year. Light winds and not a lot of rain made for some very pleasant days on the water. Fishing was generally good throughout the season.

KING SALMON- A pretty good year for kings. The Blind Slough run came in stronger than forecast for the second year in a row. Excellent fishing beginning mid June and continuing through the first week of July. The Stikine run came in about as predicted and provided good early season fishing in May and the first week of June.

COHOS or SILVER SALMON- Silvers were very spotty this year and never did show up in the numbers that were predicted. We did have some good fishing early in the season (late July) on the North side, but the fishing was inconsistent. I think we caught some fish on every trip but not in the numbers we are used to. The South side run in late August and early September was also hit and miss. We are hoping for things to return to normal next season.

Alaskan Sportfishing Updates

HALIBUT- We had some new regulations to work with concerning halibut this year. The new regulations were 1 fish of any size and 1 fish which had to be less than 32 inches, per person per day. This new regulation presented us with the challenge to try to maximize the one fish over 32 inches we were allowed to take. Generally I think we were pretty successful in doing that. We had a lot of fish in the 50 to 80 pound range this season. Even May and early June had some nice catches of quality fish. Of course July and August produced good consistent catches as usual. At this time we expect the regulations to be the same for the 2008 halibut fishing season in Alaska.

I don’t have the forecasts for next year yet, but I haven’t been hearing any negative predictions so I’m thinking things will be more or less normal, weather permitting.
